Three Figure Tsimshian Totem Pole

Three Figure Tsimshian Totem Pole

Three figure Tsimshian Bella Coola totem pole. 9".

This carving is a rare, 19th century Tsimshian model totem pole from British Columbia. The pole features a human figure sitting on a box and holding a carved implement over a female figure with labret (lip plug), who is wearing a robe and holding a child.

The smooth features and natural depiction of the human faces on this pole are diagnostically 19th century Tsimshian. The labret in the female figure’s lip identifies her as a noble person and this pole probably illustrates a clan story.

The fine details and cross-hatching on this pole accentuate the masterful carving and minimalist painting on the figures (another feature of early Tsimshian pieces). Compared to other groups, Tsimshian poles from this period are quite scarce and rarely offered for sale.
