Old Coast Salish Totem

Old Coast Salish Totem

This model pole was likely carved by a local Salish artist in the Seattle area, perhaps Duwamish or Suquamish. The pole is carved in red cedar and features a raven, frog, another raven, and face – perhaps an anthropomorphic bear.

This maker carved for Ye Olde Curiosity Shop early on in the store’s history through to the 1920s. Although the identity of the maker is unknown, they were prolific and were among the earlier Coast Salish artists to start producing model totem poles for sale to tourists. Same maker as S986.
