Northwest Coast Style Totem
The original pole was transferred to Jasper Park in 1915 to commemorate the opening of the Grand Trunk Railroad, which traversed the mountains from Alberta to Prince Rupert, BC.
In 2009, the original pole was repatriated to the Haida Nation in Massett. Certain features on this pole, such as the type of wood and the painting style, point to it possibly being made in Japan. However, it does have a period-correct paper label that reads “The Raven Pole/of Jasper Park/Standing at the Railway Statio[n].”
