Leonard spent much of his time in the west living with the Native Americans and roaming the Great Plains and desert country. While he traveled, he painted and captured scenes from working as a ranch hand, roaming, living with the Natives, exploring the Grand Canyon, Badlands and life in cattle country. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
