Steve Gunnyon (1952-2015) was a renowned silversmith and artist of Yakama/Chippewa descent. His work displayed in such prominent places as the Institute of American Indian Art Museum, the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum, and the Yakama Nation Museum. Steve was a student and graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico, where he explored and honed his skills in art. This is where he gained an affinity for the three-dimensional, particularly in the realm of jewelry making and sculpture. He is most well known for his creation and use of the “eagle feather” design in his jewelry making, which is prominently featured in the pieces in our gallery.
