(1852-1941) Oil on canvas; 20″ x 24″. Framed. Signed J.E. Stewart and dated lower left November 21st, 1909. Gold-tone gesso on wood frame. Informational papers attached to wire and frame. Noted on back “No. 1544-24 x 20, $1000”, “Autumn Tints near Milo Maine”. Pupil of Virgil Williams, R, B, Ellen, Hill and Keith, became a minor member of the important Bohemian Club. First trip to the Northwest was in 1876. In 1886 he painted California Adobe Missions before visiting Yosemite and Yellowstone. Stewart had studios in NYC, Chicago, Portland and San Francisco. He had a habit of writing on the back of each painting. He is known to have produced over 5,000 paintings from Alaska to the Panama Canal from California to Maine.
